Inaugural Tennis Tournament to Honor San Diego Resident and Raise Funds for Lung Cancer Alliance
CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Ken Wheatley, devoted husband to Sheila, a never smoker who passed away from lung cancer, announced open registration for the Sheila Ann Wheatley Tennis Classic benefiting the Lung Cancer Alliance. This social round-robin memorial charity tennis tournament will be held at the La Costa Resort and Spa on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
In a promise to Sheila to continue the fight to increase awareness and research funding for lung cancer, Ken created the Sheila Ann Wheatley Tennis Classic. This tournament will have women's, men's, and mixed doubles divisions for level 3.0-3.5 players, 4.0-4.5 players, and Open players. Visitors who want to stop-by and enjoy the event should bring folding chairs, as seating is limited.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners and finalist of each division/level. There will also be a raffle open to the public featuring a Sony 40 inch Bravia television, Dash Personal Internet Viewers and a behind-the-scenes tour of the normally closed to the public Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City. Tickets may be purchased onsite.
"Sheila knew she had an incurable, terminal illness," said Ken. "When she and I talked toward the end of her life she wanted me to do something to spare others from going through what we went through. I came up with this tournament as a start."
To register and get more information go to www.sheila4cure.org. This is a doubles event, but individuals can register and will be paired with a partner of the same skill level.
Sponsors of the event so far include: Sony, FAM International Logistics, Inc., Gardens-To-Grow, Eurest Dining Services, and 2-Twelve Studio Inc.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to support Lung Cancer Alliance, the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to support and advocacy for those living with the disease or at risk for the disease.
