Imagine Communications Enhances Selenio™ Media Convergence Platform
Driving Software-Defined Networking, MCP enables on-ramp and off-ramp for baseband over IP while supporting latest processing and compression technologies
DALLAS, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine Communications, a market share leader of software and networking solutions serving the global media and entertainment markets, today announced that it will showcase enhancements to its widely used Selenio™ Media Convergence Platform (MCP) at the 2014 NAB Show. Combining baseband video and audio processing, compression, and IP networking features in a single, space-saving platform, the Selenio MCP provides a high-performance contribution solution for live events via new JPEG2000 capability for best-in-class compression over IP, and a highly efficient satellite distribution solution by adding a built-in dual-channel DVB-S/S2 demodulator.
A key component of Imagine Communications' Software-Defined Networking framework, the Selenio MCP is the platform of choice for media companies needing a multipurpose convergence solution to efficiently manage today's baseband and hybrid operations. By providing the on-ramp and off-ramp for baseband over IP, the MCP acts as the bridge between these technologies, supporting the latest compression formats, while leveraging the high-quality video done in baseband. This announcement follows the introduction of the MCP1 in 2013 that extended the capabilities of the award-winning MCP3 (3RU) into a cost-effective, compact 1RU package.
"The addition of JPEG2000 and demodulator to Selenio MCP extends our global leadership in processing and compression technology," said Steve Copeland, Director of Product Management for Imagine Communications. "Selenio sets the industry standard for quality and flexibility, and these new capabilities provide unmatched versatility for any media company needing to consolidate equipment and cost-reduce its network."
The new multichannel JPEG2000 compression capability is especially well-suited to ultra-low latency broadcast contribution applications such as sports, live events and studio-to-studio production, providing signal transmission at high bitrates and visually lossless quality for superior editable video. Supporting real-time transport of HD, SD, 3D and IP, the enhancement enables high-density, multichannel compression over IP, with a single-module, single-slot 4-encoder solution that provides up to 56 JPEG2000 channels in a 3RU chassis. Selenio also provides broad support for additional advanced compression including H.264/MPEG4 and MPEG2 in the same form factor.
With the new demodulator capability, a single Selenio MCP can replace multiple racks of IRDs, enabling significant operational cost savings with improved power economics, reduced cabling, and far fewer redundant links. The dual-channel DVB-S/S2 demodulator enables media companies to receive and decrypt two satellite feeds per module, allowing decryption for up to 28 channels in a space-saving 3RU solution. When combined with the SelenioNext™ dense transcoder, the new Selenio modules enable dozens of demodulated channels for transcoding applications.
