Steiner, Deputy District Director since February 2013 for the Illinois District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration has been named the new Illinois District Director. Steiner is responsible for managing the day to day and strategic activities for the Illinois District—which includes a Branch Office in Springfield—and ensuring the delivery of all SBA programs and services throughout the state. Programs and services delivered by the SBA to its customers and stakeholders include counseling and training, capital access featuring SBA loan guaranty programs, and assistance in government contracting & exporting.

Steiner understands SBA's mission and the role small businesses play in the overall health of our economy. Steiner's career began as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1994. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, he later graduated from the Naval Flight Training school earning the designation of Naval Aviator – Rotary Wing (helicopter) pilot. Deployed twice to the Persian Gulf to enforce the "Iraqi no fly zone" and support the "Iraqi Freedom" campaign, he left active duty and ended his career as a Lieutenant Commander flying over 20 special operation combat missions.
In 2004, Steiner started his career in the private sector working in sales and marketing roles for Stryker, a broadly based medical device company. Several years later, Robert became the Regional General Manager and Vice President of Operations for DMX, a national provider of commercial media services and low voltage system integrator. In this role, he directed sales, operations, financial and human capital activities for the ten-state Midwest region where he provided executive leadership and tactical direction for 50 personnel servicing over 14,000 customer locations.
Opting to serve our nation once again, Steiner joined the Department of Homeland Security – Federal Protective Service for over two years. In this role, he managed the development and execution of a $68 million budget while overseeing human capital logistics, procurement, and support activities for 115 staff and contract employees.
