Illinois Home to Several of the Nation's Top Truck Bottlenecks

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Transportation Research Institute today released its annual list highlighting the most congested bottlenecks for trucks in America, and four Illinois locations made the top 100.

The 2019 Top Truck Bottleneck List assesses the level of truck-oriented congestion at 300 locations on the national highway system. The analysis, based on truck GPS data from nearly 1 million heavy duty trucks uses several customized software applications and analysis methods, along with terabytes of data from trucking operations to produce a congestion impact ranking for each location. ATRI's truck GPS data is used to support the U.S. DOT's freight mobility initiatives. The locations detailed in this latest ATRI list represent the top 100 congested locations.

"We know firsthand the value of ATRI's annual bottleneck analysis as it spurred the investment in the Circle Interchange rebuild when that location was the Number One truck bottleneck in the country for several years in a row," said Illinois Trucking Association Executive Director Matt Hart. "When that project is complete, I would fully expect to see that location drop even farther in the ranking than it has already. The State's commitment to infrastructure investment at key chokepoints will mean improved mobility for cars and trucks."

The four Illinois bottlenecks – all in Chicago – are:

No. 7: I-290 at I-90/I-94
No. 17: I-90 at I-94 (North)
No. 26: I-90 at I-94 (South)
No. 72: I-80 at I-94

"ATRI's research shows us where the worst pain points are – but they are far from the only ones. This report should be a wakeup call for elected leaders at all levels of government that we must act quickly to address our increasingly congested highway system," ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said.
