Illinois CPA Society Honors Northern Illinois University Professor James C. Young with its 2012 Outstanding Educator Award
CHICAGO, June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Illinois CPA Society recently honored Professor James C. Young, CPA, PhD, with its 2012 Outstanding Educator Award. The award recognizes Illinois educators at a community college, college, or university who excel in their leadership and teaching, and who have made continuous and outstanding contributions to accounting education in the state.
Dr. Young began teaching in 1981 while a graduate student at Michigan State University after a stint in public accounting. Currently the Crowe Horwath Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University, Jim also serves as the accountancy department Chair and teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in federal taxation and financial reporting. He developed a new, nationally-recognized paradigm for teaching introductory tax courses that helps students better understand, remember and apply tax knowledge. He also assisted in the development of NIU's Leadership Master of Accounting Science program.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Young has been extensively published in a wide variety of journals, including the National Tax Journal, Tax Notes and the Journal of Accounting Education and is involved with many professional organizations. He is the current President of the American Accounting Association's Accounting Programs Leadership Group (APLG), serves on the Accounting Accreditation Committee of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and is a member of ICPAS, the AICPA and the Illinois Board of Examiners Education Advisory Task Force.
Those who nominated Dr. Young speak of his willingness to mentor junior faculty members, as well as his passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter he teaches and his ability to simplify very complex topics for his students.
A resident of St. Charles, Illinois, Young received a B.S. from Ferris State University and an MBA and PhD from Michigan State University.
