SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- IGEL, a world leader in endpoint management software for the secure enterprise, today announced findings from the new IDC InfoBrief, "Linux and the Thin Client Management Market." In the IDC InfoBrief, sponsored by IGEL, IDC reveals findings on the key factors driving thin client adoption growth and propelling endpoint device expansion. In addition, IDC shows findings that endpoint Linux operating system (OS) shipment shares are shifting at a global level, distinctly outpacing all other OSs.
"Shipments of Linux-based endpoint devices have grown by 8% from 2015 to 2017 at a worldwide level, grabbing a larger share of the endpoint OS market. And this does not include software repurposing licenses sold, which likely would have added to the Linux market share," states the IDC InfoBrief, Linux and the Thin Client Management Market.
The IDC InfoBrief further states that key trends including increasing cloud adoption, security concerns, IoT proliferation and cost sensitivity will continue to propel endpoint Linux momentum. Further, IDC sees increasing involvement from major hardware and software providers e.g. Intel, AMD, Dell and Microsoft, who are enhancing their Linux-based solution offerings. Specifically, IDC finds that:
- Linux is a growth segment which will drive the number of open source software options, security and acceptance.
- As organizations make the cultural change to embrace Linux it can help to establish a more agile workplace.
- The cost savings from utilizing Linux on thin clients and other endpoints can be significant with lower licensing fees and maintenance costs.
- Major providers are expected to become more involved in the Linux space driving enterprise momentum and greater overall adoption.
"It has always been IGEL's belief that Linux is better at securing edge devices. It's lighter, more stable and less vulnerable than Windows – by far," said Jed Ayres, President and CEO, IGEL North America. "In fact, we predicted the domination of Linux at the endpoint early on and have perfected our Linux-based IGEL OS with more than 20 years of continual improvements. Time- and enterprise-tested, the IGEL OS provides the adaptive configuration and granular control for the familiar, trouble free workspace users demand. It's become the benchmark for Linux at the endpoint and we are now poised to capitalize on the changing tide of OS adoption."
The Linux-based IGEL OS revolutionizes access to virtualized desktops and applications. Currently in its 6th generation, it supports more remote display protocols than any solution on the market and is purpose-built for enterprise access to virtual environments of all types. IGEL OS is hardware agnostic, providing a secure OS for any x86 device, regardless of manufacturer, and offers built-in enterprise-level security and flexible, modular configuration for optimal operating performance and an enhanced user experience.
