IFAW Statement on Planned Export of 34 elephants from Zimbabwe
WASHINGTON, Dec. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Azzedine Downes, CEO, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), issued the following statement on news reports that 34 baby elephants have been seized in Zimbabwe for export into captivity in other countries.
"We know that elephants have strong family bonds, juvenile males staying with their mothers, sisters and aunts until well into their teen years, and females staying their whole lives within their family group. So we can only imagine the terror and suffering these elephants endured during this melee as the young were rounded up and taken away.
There is a spiraling poaching crisis and loss of habitat is battering elephant populations around the world. Especially given that context, unnecessarily seizing wild elephants for a lifetime in captivity is a violation of conservation principles and a blatant disregard of animal welfare.
We urge the Ministers of Environment and Tourism in Zimbabwe to use their authority to stop the export of these elephants."
