IFAW provides second chance for dogs and kittens from Lebanon
YARMOUTH PORT, Mass., Sept. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) flew nine mixed breed dogs and four special needs kittens from foster homes in Beirut, Lebanon to Boston, MA, where they will find forever homes in the US. Animal advocates from the organization Animals Lebanon requested IFAW's assistance in re-homing the dogs, which are difficult to adopt in country.
Seven females and two male dogs were rescued, including two sets of six-month-old siblings named Batman and Robyn and Cupcake and Muffin. The other dogs include Star, Bourbon, Hadeel, Kimi and Bella and are between eight months and two-and-a-half years old. The kittens have all survived illnesses or injuries and are named Amia (blind), Sousou, Quick and Kookla (amputee).
"We are elated to give these dogs and kittens a second chance in the United States," said Shannon Walajtys, IFAW Disaster Response Manager. "Animals Lebanon also requested additional veterinary training, and we are honored to empower local teams with training and supplies to improve the health and well-being of animals in crisis."
Following a long flight, IFAW staff delivered the dogs and kittens using a 36-foot animal transport trailer supported in part by GreaterGood.org. All of the animals have been examined by a veterinarian and are up-to-date with vaccinations including rabies. They will be available for adoption after a 48-hour quarantine period and Sweet Paws Rescue in Essex, MA will care for them through their foster care network in the meantime.
IFAW has rescued and treated domestic and wild animals in more than 30 of the world's worst disasters including the recent earthquakes in Nepal, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Hurricane Sandy in the US, and the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis in Japan.
