IEEE Xplore® Digital Library Reaches Three Million Documents as Pace of Technical Contributions Accelerates

From Smart Grid to Cloud Computing, Authors Adding More Than 1,000 Research Papers Daily to Drive Global Innovation

PISCATAWAY, N.J., Aug. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The IEEE Xplore digital library, one of the world's largest collections of high quality technical literature in engineering and technology, recently added its three millionth document to its vast digital library. "Protecting Smart Grid Automation Systems Against Cyberattacks," which appears in the current issue of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, reflects a sample of the diverse technical disciplines represented in the collection. It took five years to grow the IEEE Xplore repository from one million to two million documents; and less than two-and-a-half years to reach this latest milestone.

According to IEEE Publications Staff Executive Anthony Durniak, the significant growth of the IEEE Xplore digital library is a direct reflection of the pace of today's multi-disciplinary engineering and technology innovations, and the fact that authors increasingly come from all corners of the world.

"Protecting Smart Grid Automation Systems Against Cyberattacks" was authored by Dong Wei and Yan Lu, two IEEE members from Siemens; Mohsen Jafari, an IEEE member from Rutgers University, N.J.; Paul M. Skare, an IEEE member from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Kenneth Rohde from the Cyber Security Research and Development Department at the Idaho National Laboratory. There are more than 2,500 smart grid articles in the IEEE Xplore digital library.

The IEEE Xplore online collection includes content from IEEE's own 151 journals and magazines, papers from more than 1,000 annual conferences, and over 2,000 technology standards. Its growth has also been aided by content from partners such as the American Institute of Physics (AIP), IBM, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and VDE, a publishing house for electrical engineering and information technology. The information in IEEE Xplore dates as far back as 1872. Today, the scope of the collection includes all major technology areas including: aerospace, computer hardware and software, digital signal processing, power electronics, renewable energy, semiconductors, and wireless technologies.

As the collection has grown larger and more diverse, IEEE has developed a range of online subscription options for large institutions, small corporate workgroups, and individuals. Most documents can also be purchased online individually. IEEE Xplore subscribers today number in the thousands and include universities, corporations, and governmental units all over the world.
