IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy Celebrates 40th Anniversary

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., April 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (IEEE S&P), sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Security and Privacy, in cooperation with the International Association for Cryptologic Research, will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Symposium will be held on May 20-22, 2019, and the Security and Privacy Workshops will be held on May 23, 2019. Both events will be held in San Francisco, CA, at the Hyatt Regency.

Since 1980, the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy has been the premier forum for presenting developments in computer security and electronic privacy, and for bringing together researchers and practitioners in the field. The 2019 Symposium will mark the 40th annual meeting of this flagship conference, highlighting security and privacy's progress over the years, while looking forward to its future.

In honor of the 40th anniversary, a special session is planned for May 21, featuring a time-traveling panel discussion moderated by Dr. Giovanni Vigna (UCSB), on the past four decades of the symposium, followed by a light reception. There will also be a week-long treasure hunt in conjunction with the anniversary featuring puzzles and trivia, with 40 prizes awarded to high-scorers. The IEEE Computer Society further commemorates this milestone by offering free access to five articles from IEEE Security & Privacy magazine at www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP2019/spmag.html.

IEEE S&P will begin a new tradition this year with the inaugural IEEE Security & Privacy Test of Time Awards. On May 21, two sets of awards will be presented: the first annual Test of Time Awards, and a special set of Test of Time Awards to recognize papers from the first 15 years of the Symposium, which fall outside the window of consideration for the annual award.

S&P Test of Time Awards - The IEEE Security and Privacy "Test of Time" award is intended to recognize papers published at IEEE's flagship security conference that have made a lasting impact on the field. To qualify, a paper must have been published at the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (IEEE S&P) between 10 and 12 years prior. Each year, the awards selection committee is charged to select one or more winners from among the eligible set using their own experience and knowledge.
S&P Test of Time: The First Fifteen Years - In the first years of the Test of Time Awards, we are also including "catch-up" awards for the earlier years. This year we are honoring papers from the first 15 years of the Symposium that have made a lasting impact on the field. In subsequent years, more recent papers will be honored. The selection committee was chosen independently of the regular Test of Time committee, with particular attention being paid to those who were familiar with security and privacy work during that era.

A record-breaking number of papers have been accepted for IEEE S&P 2019, with a total of 84 papers, representing a 33% increase from last year. Accepted papers for the Symposium are available in the IEEE Computer Society's Digital Library.

To expand opportunities for scientific exchanges, the IEEE CS Technical Committee on Security and Privacy created the Security and Privacy Workshops (SPW), which are now tightly integrated with IEEE S&P.
