Identity Security Group Says: "Finally, A National Standard for Security Documents to Combat Fake IDs"
WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved a national standard, "Minimum Security Requirements for Security Documents" under the sponsorship of the North American Security Products Organization (NASPO). As part of the NASPO-led team of subject matter experts, Keeping IDentities Safe supported the Security Documents Working Group through Brian Zimmer's participation.
The consequences of potential misuses of an ID can be estimated, as well the likelihood of attempts to counterfeit it through use of this new standard. Intended as a reference and procedural tool for both industry and governmental credential issuing agencies, such as motor vehicle agencies, those seeking to meet the standard can follow specific decision steps to enumerate all purposes of a security document. The potential undesired outcomes as well as benefits of higher security can be matched with appropriate security technologies.
Mr. Zimmer stated, "The ANSI approval of the soon to be released Security Documents standard has taken place at a crucial time. Overseas counterfeiters are producing high quality counterfeit driver's licenses and ID cards at an alarming rate, undermining state and federal laws aimed at protecting youth. The easy access via internet vendors to counterfeit driver's licenses connotes high imposter risk from international and domestic terrorist threats. Importantly, decision makers can refer to the standard when considering upgrades to the physical security of driver's licenses and ID credentials issued to state police and to state employees with sensitive responsibilities. Using this standard, driver's license agencies can more easily resolve the cost and risk tradeoffs of sophisticated card security technologies."
Information about the Security Documents Standard can be found on the NASPO website, here. NASPO will have the standard available for download (sale) by October 17 at: www.naspo.info/naspo-products/standard.
