Boise Resident, Charlie Brown, Named AARP Andrus Award Winner, Effort with Retired Teachers & Advocacy Efforts for State Retirees Cited
BOISE, Idaho, Nov. 19, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, a local Idaho man was named the recipient of AARP's most prestigious honor, the Andrus Award, named for the Association's founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. Charlie Brown of Boise was cited for his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others through his community service, his work with the Retired Educators Association of Idaho (REAI), and his advocacy efforts.
Among his many volunteer activities and roles, Brown serves as the Executive Secretary of the Retired Educators Association of Idaho (REAI), a state advocacy leader for AARP Idaho, the Finance Committee of the Idaho Public Employees Association (IPEA) and an advisor to the local Phi Delta Kappa Chapter.
Brown's tireless efforts in stopping a first time legislative attempt to deny Idaho state retirees a cost of living adjustment was one of the many reasons mentioned for his selection as this year's award winner. Brown received the Andrus Award today in Meridian at a luncheon in his honor.
"Charlie has led a life full of serving others, from his time in the military to teaching – his retirement hasn't changed that passion one bit," said Peggy Munson, Volunteer State President for AARP in Idaho. "He embodies the mission of AARP 'to serve, not to be served,' everyday."
The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service recognizes members and volunteers who, through volunteer service, are significantly enhancing the lives of individuals age 50 and older.
"Charlie is vital to AARP's work in Idaho, he serves as a constant reminder that we can all work together for positive social change," said Jim Wordelman, State Director for AARP in Idaho. "His work in the legislative arena this year helped ensure state retirees received a COLA at a crucial time."
Recipients across the nation were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve the community where the work was performed, and inspire others to volunteer.
AARP is Idaho's largest membership organization with 180,000 members.
