ICP And Huawei Announce Winners Of "NEXT-IMAGE Awards"

Grand Prize Winner Francisca Reyes, whose work Subtle Summer took the prize in the "Hello, All" category as well, said of her photo: "I took this picture in my mother's house in Santiago, Chile, on a late spring day. My six-year-old daughter Pascuala had spent the afternoon in the pool, and we were ready to leave. Her hair was wet and dripping over her dress, so I wrapped it in a braided ponytail. I thought the light was beautiful with sunset approaching, and her simple, red and yellow dress played well with the color of the walls and the art. I think there's something mysterious about the way she is standing in the room, reflecting after looking at the woman in the painting. I wonder what she was thinking about."

The NEXT-IMAGE Awards jury was composed of Mark Lubell, Executive Director of the International Center of Photography; Alex Webb, Magnum Photos photographer; Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International; Liu Heung Shing, Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist and Founding Director of the Shanghai Center of Photography; Li Changzhu, Vice President of Huawei Smartphones; He Hongshan, actress and photographer; NK, freelance photographer; and ICP students Alphanso Appleton, photojournalist; Rebecca Morrello, freelance photographer; and Roy Baizan, Teaching Assistant of the Bronx Documentary Center.

The NEXT-IMAGE Awards category winners won a Huawei MateBook X and Huawei Mate 10. The Grand Prize Winner received $20,000.

The contest marked the first phase of an exciting partnership between ICP and Huawei, which kicked off this fall and will run through 2018. The collaboration is designed to celebrate the power of photography and engage talented imagemakers from around the world in a global dialogue.
