iControl Networks Expands Connected Home Patent Portfolio and Program
iControl Acquires Foundational Networking Patent, Issued New Patent for In-home Touch Screen Connectivity
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- iControl Networks, a leader in connected home technology and innovation, today announced further expansion of its patent portfolio. iControl's robust intellectual property portfolio underscores the company's position as a leader in delivering the most advanced connected home platforms on the market today.
iControl's acquisition of the seminal networking patent, US Patent Number 6,624,750, "Wireless Home Fire and Security Alarm System," allows iControl to better protect customers who rely on Z-Wave or ZigBee for their connected home solutions. The '750 patent defines the core methodology used by both wireless mesh networking technologies in the management of devices such as motion sensors, thermostats and garage door openers.
iControl also announced the upcoming issuance of US Patent Number 8,612,591, "Security System with Networked Touchscreen." The technology addressed by the '591 patent is critical to the delivery of Z-Wave and ZigBee solutions that are integrated with a home security touch screen. This is the 24th home technology patent issued to iControl worldwide, with more than 90 additional patent applications pending.
"iControl is committed to protecting its innovations and to continue leading the industry in smart home technology development," said Richard Mosher, general counsel for iControl Networks. "For nearly a decade, iControl has prioritized investment and development in areas critical to the connected home, and we are thrilled to see our intellectual property portfolio continue to grow. Developing and managing IP that protects our customers is a key focus area for iControl as the connected home market explodes with new entrants."
Mosher was hired as iControl's general counsel earlier this year. He spent the last decade as general counsel for both public and private companies, and has been instrumental in developing and expanding intellectual property portfolios and strategies, including the management of the extensive Intellisync patent portfolio, which has been used by dozens of licensees and was acquired by Nokia. Under Mosher's leadership, iControl will expand its two-pronged approach to intellectual property protection by focusing on both product development and active patent portfolio growth.
"iControl has raised more than $130 million and has invested heavily in a comprehensive connected home IP portfolio. Today's connected home marketplace is increasingly competitive, and we want to ensure that iControl and its partners are set up for success," Mosher said. "We believe the acquisition of the '750 patent is a huge win for our customers as it further protects the iControl technology and keeps this patent from being exploited offensively by a third party. We will continue aggressive portfolio growth to protect our vision and innovations."
