WASHINGTON, Sept. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The ICMA-RC Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund (ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund) is pleased to announce that 30 surviving children and spouses of fallen firefighters, police officers and public employees have been awarded post-secondary educational scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Established in 2001 by ICMA-RC and its Board of Directors, the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the lives of the nation's city, county, and state government employees, including firefighters and police officers, who have died serving and protecting local communities. Since its inception, the ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $860,000 in scholarships to approximately 250 surviving children and spouses in their pursuit of higher education.
"On behalf of the ICMA-RC Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and our donors, it is an honor to award this year's scholarships to 30 deserving students," said Joan McCallen, president of the ICMA-RC Vantagepoint Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund and president and CEO of ICMA-RC. "The ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the tremendous sacrifice that public employees who die in the line of duty make in the service of their communities and we hope it will inspire the continued determination and achievement of surviving family members."
This year's scholarship recipients hail from towns and cities, both large and small, in 15 states across the country. Recipients were selected based on factors including financial need, academic record, demonstrated leadership in school and community activities, honors and work experience. Each scholarship recipient is the child or spouse of a local or state public sector employee who died in the line of duty.
