-- Survivors Receive Scholarships for 2015-2016 and Are Honored in Washington, D.C. --
WASHINGTON, June 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The ICMA-RC Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund (ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund) is pleased to announce that 36 surviving children and spouses of fallen firefighters, police officers, and other state and local public sector employees have been awarded post-secondary educational scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year.
The ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the contributions of local and state public employees who died while serving and protecting their communities, and is given to help surviving children and spouses attend an accredited two-year community college, four-year accredited university, or vocational school full-time. Scholarship recipients are selected based on criteria such as academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, academic honors, and financial need. To date, ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarships totaling more than $950,000 have been awarded to 250 recipients.
"ICMA-RC Memorial Scholarship Award recipients are remarkable for having triumphed over tremendous loss to achieve exceptional personal and academic success," said ICMA-RC President and CEO Bob Schultze. He adds, "Many of them are planning careers involving service to others, some choosing to follow in the footsteps of their departed loved ones into the fields of law enforcement and fire safety. It is an honor to help them achieve their academic and career goals."
Fifteen scholarship recipients are scheduled to tour Washington, D.C. national monuments on Wednesday, June 24, concluding the tour at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In the evening, the students and their families will attend a commemorative dinner at the National Press Club hosted by ICMA-RC, with representatives from the Concerns of Police Survivors and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and local public safety officials from the City of Alexandria and Prince George's County.
The ICMA-RC Public Employee Memorial Scholarship Fund is made possible through the generosity of contributing donors. For more information about how to apply for a scholarship or contribute to the fund, please visit www.icmarc.org/vantagescholar.
