ICE Reports Record Average Daily Futures Volume, up 30% in January; Record ADV for ICE Brent, Gasoil and WTI Futures
ATLANTA, Feb. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IntercontinentalExchange (NYSE: ICE), a leading operator of regulated global futures exchanges, clearing houses and over-the-counter (OTC) markets, reported strong volume growth for its futures business in the first month of 2011. Average daily volume (ADV) for ICE's futures markets was a record 1,578,227 contracts, up 30% from January 2010. ICE Futures Europe established a monthly record of 23.5 million contracts and a monthly ADV record of 1,176,543 contracts, an increase of 45% from the first month of 2010, and the exchange's first monthly ADV total in excess of one million contracts.
Total futures volume in January 2011 was a record 31.6 million contracts.
January 2011 Review
- ICE Futures Europe records:
- The exchange established a daily volume record of 1,492,384 contracts on January 28.
- ICE Brent Crude futures set a daily volume record of 726,578 contracts on January 12. ICE WTI Crude futures established a daily volume record of 492,165 contracts on January 28.
- ICE Brent Crude, ICE WTI Crude and ICE Gasoil futures established monthly volume records of 10,681,994 contracts, 6,432,931 contracts and 5,282,513 contracts, respectively.
- ICE Brent Crude, ICE WTI Crude and ICE Gasoil futures set monthly ADV records of 534,100 contracts, 321,647 contracts and 264,126 contracts, respectively.
- ICE Futures U.S. records:
- The Russell 1000 Value Index mini futures and Russell 1000 Growth Index mini futures set daily volume records on January 4.
- ICE Futures Canada records:
- The exchange established an open interest record of 231,786 contracts on January 24.
- Canola futures established an open interest record of 211,151 contracts on January 24.
- ICE has been shortlisted for FT ArcelorMittal "Boldness in Business Awards" in the category of Drivers of Change.
- ICE and NGX announced the addition of Canadian and U.S. physical and Canadian financial crude oil products to their existing clearing and technology alliance.
- ICE's credit default swap (CDS) clearing houses surpassed $15 trillion in cumulative gross notional value cleared and 400,000 transactions during the week ending January 21, 2011.
- ICE announced 26 new energy contracts, including three new U.S. thermal coal futures contracts, will be launched on February 21.
- Through January 28, ICE's CDS clearing houses have cleared $15.2 trillion in gross notional value on a cumulative basis across 407,948 transactions. ICE currently lists 257 CDS contracts for clearing.
- ICE Trust U.S. (ICE Trust) has cleared $9.1 trillion of gross notional value since inception, including $646 billion in single-name CDS, resulting in open interest of $545 billion. ICE Trust offers clearing for 37 indexes and 89 single-name contracts.
- ICE Clear Europe has cleared 4.5 trillion Euro ($6.1 trillion) of gross notional value since inception, including 712 billion Euro ($942 billion) in single-name CDS, resulting in 474 billion Euro ($644 billion) of open interest. ICE Clear Europe offers clearing for 30 indexes and 101 single-name contracts.
