"We are excited to offer this improved touch screen display device and technology to our global base of buyers. Specifically, this package would be an important addition to the IP portfolios of tablet or smart phone manufacturers wishing to create the next generation of versatile, portable, and interactive communications devices," says Dean Becker, CEO of ICAP Patent Brokerage.
Key Characteristics & Benefits
This portfolio covers an improved touch screen display device having a tactile response keyboard. Tactile feedback in electronic devices improves the pointing interactions by pressing buttons at faster speeds and more accurately than standard non-responsive visual keypads. The patented interactive device features imaged keys on the touch screen and increases the usable surfaces of a device from one surface – display and keyboard – to two surfaces – one display and one keyboard. This is achieved via the appearance of temporary physical keys upon application of an electric or magnetic field to the physical keypad. For example, the user facing screen shows the imaged keyboard, while the actual, physical keyboard is on the opposite side of the device, thus keeping the viewing screen smooth and clean for display.
The sealing of the device, using actuators, protects the electronics of the device from the environment. Also, this sealing procedure uses magnetism to push and pull the keys through a waterproof layer, while also allowing increased speed and minimizing errors when pressing keys. Further, the magnets in the keyboard generate electricity, which improves the device's battery life. The expanded user interface surface and efficiency afforded by implementing this technology would increase usability of portable communications devices such as tablets and smart phones.
