IBM Tops in Server Market in 4Q and Full Year 2009
Records Largest Rate of x86 Revenue Growth in Industry; Gains Another 3.5 Points in YTY x86 Revenue Share
ARMONK, N.Y., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IDC reported today that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was the top server vendor in 4Q09 with 35.4 percent factory revenue share, outdistancing second-place HP which held 30.5 percent. IBM also was the top server vendor for calendar year 2009, with 32.9 percent factory revenue to HP's 29.9 percent.

IBM experienced the largest x86 server growth rate of the top five server vendors in 4Q09 and now holds 19.6 percent factory revenue share -- a 3.5 point year-over-year share gain, the fourth consecutive quarter of revenue share gains, according to IDC. IBM outpaced HP, which gained 0.9 points of factory revenue share during the quarter. The Q4 numbers mean IBM had the largest year-over-year share gains among major x86 server vendors in each quarter of 2009.
IDC reported that IBM significantly outperformed the blade market in 4Q09, recording year-over-year factory revenue growth of 61.4 percent in blades and gained 5.7 revenue share points. The overall blade market's factory revenue grew 30.9 percent.
Other highlights for IBM included:
- In the UNIX segment for 4Q09, IBM gained over 3.4 points of factory revenue share from a year ago and held 47.9 percent of the market. HP lost 1.5 revenue share points year-over-year and fell to 23.7 percent, while Sun dropped 1.1 point of revenue share year-over-year to 22.7 percent. It was IBM's seventh consecutive quarter of market share growth.
- IBM continued to lead the market for servers costing more than $250,000, holding 61 percent factory revenue share year-over-year led by its System z mainframe.
