ARMONK, N.Y., Feb. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Samsung Electronics has joined the OpenPOWER Foundation -- an open development alliance based on IBM's POWER microprocessor architecture.

The OpenPOWER Foundation, announced in August 2013, intends to build advanced server, networking, storage and acceleration technology aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers. The group makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time, as well as making POWER intellectual property licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform.
2014 Officers
Key OpenPOWER Foundation leadership positions for 2014: Gordon MacKean, Google Engineering Director, Platforms, is Chairman; IBM Fellow Bradley McCredie has been named President; Michael Diamond, Nvidia Senior Director of Marketing, will serve as Vice President; and IBM Distinguished Engineer Jeff Brown is Chairman of the Technical Steering Committee.
Areas of Development Focus
The OpenPOWER Foundation is prioritizing four technical areas for development: System Software, Application Software, Open Server Development Platform and Hardware Architecture. Current focus is on software development and preliminary hardware design.
