FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America reported total February sales of 53,013 units, a 16% increase in comparison with February 2019 and the highest February sales in Hyundai history, outpacing the previous record of February 2016. The February sales result is the 17th time in the last 19 months that Hyundai has had increasing overall vehicle sales. Additionally, Hyundai achieved this overall sales growth while continuing to reduce its dependency on fleet sales, which were down 20% on the month and represented 15% of total sales.

Retail Highlights
Hyundai's retail sales grew by a substantial 26% in February, establishing a new February record. Retail gains on the month were led by Tucson (up 58%), Kona (up 16%) and a record-setting 6,953 Palisade retail units. In total, retail SUV sales finished at 28,418 units, the best-ever February total, growing 57%. SUV sales represented a 63% mix of retail volume, the eighth consecutive month exceeding 60%.
While SUVs continue to drive much of Hyundai's retail gains, Sonata achieved a 12% increase in sales driven almost entirely by the all-new 2020 model, indicating consumers are attracted to its styling, driving dynamics and technology features.
Hyundai's eco-friendly lineup also continues to gain traction, with total hybrid, plug-in, electric and fuel cell retail vehicle sales increasing 49%.
Total Volume Highlights
Hyundai set a new record for February sales with growth across the entire lineup. SUVs set their all-time February total sales record, selling 32,059 units, increasing 28% compared with February 2019.
Vehicles with increasing total sales included Accent (up 14%), Elantra (up 1%), Tucson (up 2%), Ioniq (up 44%), Kona (up 25%) and Nexo (up 460%).

- 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKS: Hyundai tied for the most combined 2020 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ and TOP SAFETY PICK-rated vehicles in the entire industry.
- Chicago Auto Show: At the 2020 Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai introduced the all-new segment-busting Sonata Hybrid and provided more details on its new Complimentary Maintenance program.
- DOE Partnership Expansion: Hyundai Motor Company expanded its partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its support of the DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program, including providing the agency with five NEXO fuel cell vehicles.
- Palisade Wins Coveted Cars.com "Best of 2020" Award: The 2020 Palisade was named the winner of the coveted "Best of 2020" award from the third-party automotive experts at Cars.com. Every year, Cars.com tests dozens of new vehicles and considers their respective quality, innovation and value to determine an overall winner.
- 2020 MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Awards: The 2020 Sonata and Palisade were both awarded 2020 MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Awards in their respective categories. The Hyundai Sonata was the winner of the Best Family Sedan and the Hyundai Palisade shared honors in the Best Large Utility category.
- Long-Term Ownership Value Awards from Kelley Blue Book: The 2020 Elantra, Santa Fe and Venue were all recipients of the 2020 Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Award for the compact car, mid-size 2-row crossover and subcompact crossover segments, respectively.
- Sonata ALG Redesign of the Year: The all-new 2020 Sonata was named Redesign of the Year by ALG. The all-new Sonata, with its four-door coupe look with spacious interior and advanced technologies, was recognized by ALG for having the strongest redesign based on overall degree of change and execution.
- Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality: Hyundai Motor America was named one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the fourth consecutive year it earned a top rating.
