Hyundai Hope On Wheels, Congressional Leaders And Local Children's Hospitals Honor National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Friday, September 19, 2014
Hyundai Nonprofit Donates a Total of $9M to 36 U.S. Children's Oncology Group Hospitals and Research Institutions during September's National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; Nonprofit Announces $87 million in Research Funding in Support of Childhood Cancer Research and Programs by Year-end
/PRNewswire/ -- September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – a time to bring awareness to childhood cancer and recognize the young lives impacted by the disease. While pediatric cancer is relatively rare and research has created cure rates upwards of 80 percent, pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children in the United States. There are 15,000 new cases diagnosed each year, and one in five of these children will not survive the disease. Hyundai Hope On Wheels® is a 501(c)(3) committed to helping kids fight cancer by providing funding for research and treatment, and through increasing awareness for the disease. Since its inception in 1998, Hope On Wheels has provided over $87 million in life saving grants.
This month, Hope On Wheels will donate a total of $9 million to 36 Children's Oncology Group (COG) hospitals and institutions across the United States in support of continued medical research and programs that improve the quality of life for children with cancer. Hope On Wheels representatives will be joined by members of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, policymakers, Hyundai executives and dealers, practitioners and patients as it announces the accomplishments of its annual September program. Special recognition will be given to greater Washington, D.C. metro area hospitals that are receiving Scholar Hope Grants; including Children's National Medical Center and Inova Children's Hospital.
Additionally, Dr. Leonard Sender, Medical Director, Hyundai Cancer Institute, CHOC Children's will provide an overview of the current state of pediatric oncology, particularly around the ground breaking research being conducted throughout the industry.
