CLEVELAND, Dec. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthcare providers continue to look for technologies that will drive better patient care, and ultimately create a complete electronic health record (EHR). But if patients are top of mind in this IT search, meeting "meaningful use" requirements is a close second. Across more than 1,400 healthcare providers, Hyland Software's OnBase enterprise content management (ECM) solution has proven that it's an important component of an EHR, especially when integrated with an electronic medical record (EMR). Confirming this value, and showing its commitment to its healthcare customers, Hyland's OnBase has successfully achieved meaningful use certification as an EHR Module, according to the Drummond Group.

"Meeting meaningful use criteria is a major concern for healthcare providers today, but it's also yielding great value to the market. Most importantly, it's creating a better understanding of what's needed to create a complete electronic patient record," said Susan deCathelineau, senior manager, healthcare solutions for Hyland Software. "Our customers have been leveraging OnBase as a component of the EHR for years, in part because of its ability to manage content found outside of the boundaries of EMRs, like digital photos and EKG results. And now, we can proudly tell them that while they were ahead of the game all along, their strategic use of OnBase is now backed by the federal government's approval."
Drummond Group is an ONC-ATCB (Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Testing and Certification Body) for the 2011/2012 certification program, both testing and certifying that EHRs and components of EHRs meet the meaningful use criteria for either eligible provider or hospital technology. In turn, healthcare providers using the certified products are qualified to receive federal stimulus monies under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) upon demonstrating meaningful use of the technology.
"Today, most healthcare organizations start to think about ECM because of the clear benefits on the clinical care side. But for organizations that choose OnBase, clinical use represents just one piece of our solution's potential. These organizations get that the continuum of patient care crosses all functions of their organizations – clinical, revenue cycle and administrative departments – and therefore, so should ECM. In other words, while an ECM solution might start by integrating with an EMR, it also must be able to roll out, for example, to patient financial services, where it can augment billing systems with workflow and integration capabilities," said deCathelineau.
"Will providers get any extra funding for this kind of ECM solution? Maybe not. But they will get an ECM solution with a lower long-term cost and more sustainable value that better connects the healthcare enterprise."
