Hygeia Introduces Environmentally Preferable Product Breastpump Program to Enable Mothers to Recycle and Refurbish Used Breastpumps
VISTA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Hygeia, the makers of an eco-friendly breastpump that is FDA-cleared to be used by multiple moms with their own personal accessory set, today announces its new Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) Breastpump program. The program makes it easy for individual breastfeeding mothers, corporations with corporate lactation programs and government agencies, including WIC, to return their Hygeia pump to Hygeia for recycling and refurbishing. Hygeia's EPP program follows rules to ensure the procurement or acquisition of the goods have a lesser effect on human health and the environment when compared to competing goods.
How the EPP Breastpump Program Works
After buying and finishing using her Hygeia breastpump, a mother or agency calls Hygeia, pays a remanufacturing fee (about $99 for individuals and corporations) and is then issued a UPS call tag. UPS then picks up the pump from the mother's house, remanufacturers it and delivers it to whomever the current owner designates as the new owner. The remanufactured breastpump comes with a full manufacturer's warranty and the pump is nicely repackaged for the new recipient with a brand new personal accessory set. The pump is, of course, FDA-cleared to be used by the new mother.
Richard Weston, the CEO and founder of Hygeia, says, "This program saves moms a lot of money. Instead of buying a new pump, she can safely and confidently buy a used pump from her sister or friend since Hygeia serves as the middleman in the resale. Hygeia will inspect and refurbish the pump and provide new packaging, a new personal accessory set and a new manufacturer's warranty. A bonus benefit is it also means fewer pumps end up cluttering our landfills since they get used - and re-used - time and time again."
Another key benefit to the program is that it reduces the unauthorized sales of personal use pumps by WIC participants, allowing corporations to recoup the full value of their breastpumps since all participants return the pumps to Hygeia for refurbishing.
"I believe I have invented a better breastpump to ensure moms are reusing vs. disposing of our precious resources. Our commitment to Mother Earth and breastfeeding mothers is heartfelt and unmatched in the industry," says Weston.
This new program meets all the criteria for federal and most state EPP programs, including California.
