HydroCision References the Recent Internet Spine Journal Study as Encouraging and Hopeful for the Estimated 60 Million Suffering with Symptomatic Spinal Lumbar Disc Herniations
Study points to the efficacy of the Hydrodiscectomy procedure, a high-velocity water-jet therapy for treating leg and back pain
NORTH BILLERICA, Mass., Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- HydroCision Inc., a privately held medical device company, announced the results of a multi-center study published in the January edition of the Internet Spine Journal demonstrating a 94% improvement in back and leg pain for patients receiving Hydrodiscectomy.
It has been estimated that more than 60 million people worldwide experience chronic lower back and leg pain, which is often caused by herniated or "bulging" spinal discs, a leading cause of disability among Americans less than 45 years of age. The study consisted of a retrospective analysis of 50 patients who received the Hydrodiscectomy procedure after failing conservative treatment such as pain medications, physical therapy and epidural steroid injections.
HydroCision's Hydrodiscectomy procedure uses a high velocity water jet to quickly and effectively decompress herniated discs without the collateral thermal or mechanical trauma associated with other surgical modalities. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed through a needle-sized cannula thereby minimizing patient post-operative pain and recovery time. Patients undergo local instead of general anesthesia in an out-patient setting and are able to return home the same day with no more than a Band-Aid® on their back.
"We are excited and encouraged about these study findings," said Howard Donnelly, CEO, adding that, "One of our core strategic initiatives will be to continue to invest in U.S.-based research projects designed to further validate the clinical and economic value of HydroCision products for clinicians and their patients as well as government-sponsored and private insurance companies."
