Hurricane Harvey: Travel Insurance Coverage For Labor Day Weekend Travel Complications
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hurricane Harvey's torrential rain is expected to continue this week, jeopardizing Labor Day Weekend travel plans. Leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains when travel insurance can refund travelers if the storm ruins their travel plans.
"Cancellations could be a major problem this Labor Day Weekend," says Squaremouth Claims Director Brandi Morse. "We've already spoken with multiple customers who have been forced to cancel their trips because their flights were cancelled."
Coverage If You Can't Leave With Travel at a Standstill
Due to flooded roads and airport closures, including Houston's two hub airports, travelers starting their Labor Day trips may run into long delays and airline cancellations. If this forces a traveler to cancel their trip altogether, travel insurance may refund their entire trip cost.
The Trip Cancellation benefit can reimburse a traveler if weather causes a lengthy flight delay or an outright cancellation. Some policies can even cover travelers who can't get to the airport if weather causes road closures. In order for a traveler to be refunded, they must have bought a policy before the storm was named on August 17.
Coverage If You Don't Want to Leave Your Home
Airline closures aren't the only weather-related event that can be covered, but travelers won't be covered to cancel just because they don't want to travel. Some policies with Trip Cancellation can cover travelers if their home or place of work is deemed uninhabitable.
If a traveler doesn't meet a policy's requirements, they can only be partially refunded if they bought the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade. However, timing may be an issue. This coverage requires travelers to cancel their trip at least 2-3 days before they are scheduled to leave.
Squaremouth created the Hurricane Harvey and Travel Insurance Information Center to answer travelers' questions with up-to-date coverage information as events unfold.
