Hurricane Florence About to Make LandFall; Three Tips for Traveling During Hurricane Season
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In the past century, only seven major hurricanes have hit the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts. Striking the Carolina coasts tonight, Hurricane Florence is a strong Category 2 storm expected to devastate the coastal cities with 80+ mph winds and three feet of rain.
What does this mean for travelers who were planning to visit family in Charleston or relax at a Myrtle Beach resort this weekend?
Airlines and hotels may waive change fees or cancellation fees for those affected by the storm. Those who purchased travel insurance prior to September 6, when the storm was named, may be covered for cancellations, interruptions, and travel delays. Since this is now a "foreseen" event, travelers who purchase a travel insurance policy after said date will not have coverage if looking to open a hurricane-related claim.
If you're planning a trip to a hurricane-prone destination, make sure you're prepared. Travel experts at Yonder Travel Insurance put together three tips for those traveling during hurricane season:
1. Stay Alert & Informed
When you enroll in the U.S. Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), you can opt to receive safety updates on countries you plan to visit. You can also check the National Hurricane Center website for updates leading up to your trip – they usually name a hurricane 36 to 48 hours in advance.
2. Purchase Travel Insurance Early
Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include cancelation coverage in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm. Purchase your plan early, because you will no longer be able to purchase a policy with coverage for a named storm once it's deemed "foreseeable."
3. Pack Smart
Your trip is finally here and the weather looks like it's going to hold! Make sure you're still prepared if something changes. Pack a small first aid kit, battery-powered flashlight, and non-perishable foods just in case a natural disaster heads your way.
