Hurley Trauma Patient Turned RN is Hurley Medical Center's 2010 Trauma Golf Ambassador
Tim Hubbard, RN, BSN is Guest of Honor at 26th Trauma Golf Classic at Flint Golf Club
FLINT, Mich., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tim Hubbard's life changed dramatically on January 6, 2002. Tim, his brother Todd and his father were working on their stalled truck on rural South Baldwin Road in Oakland County, when a car going 60 mph lost control and struck Tim and his brother, propelling them into the air and leaving them both critically injured. Tim's brother suffered leg and femur fractures and was partially scalped in the accident. Tim was thrown 40 feet before landing on his head and neck, unconscious.
Tim was transferred to Hurley's Level I Trauma Center with a closed head injury and incomplete spinal chord injury. His left leg was nearly severed. But, thanks to Hurley, he survived. Eleven days later, he awoke in the Hurley NeuroTrauma Unit, paralyzed from the waist down. After a month of intensive care, Tim began the challenging task of regaining control of his body and his life. Following discharge, Tim moved from a wheelchair to a walker, and today, Tim walks independently with no limitations from this nearly fatal accident.
Tim continued his rehab at Hurley's Rehabilitation Services at Longway Boulevard in Flint for 3 years. "I knew I wanted to go into nursing because of the exceptional care and support my family and I received when I was a patient," says Tim. "I knew there was only one place I wanted to be a nurse – at Hurley. "They saved my life, and now I am able to care for patients the same way I was cared for 7 years ago, and in the same unit. Today, I have a second chance. And, it's all because of Hurley."
On Monday, September 13, 2010 the Hurley Foundation will hold its 26th Annual Trauma Center Golf Classic at the Flint Golf Club to benefit Hurley's Trauma Center and Burn Unit at Hurley Medical Center – the region's only Level I Trauma Center.
