Huntington Hospital Receives ICAVL Accreditation for Its Vascular Laboratory

PASADENA, Calif., March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Huntington Memorial Hospital has received accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).  The hospital earned this recognition for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease.

The ICAVL assesses the laboratory's daily operations and patient care protocols.  Laboratories seeking accreditation must identify and correct potential problems, revise protocols and validate quality assurance programs.

Cardiovascular disease is the highest cause of death in the United States, costing over $83.7 billion dollars each year in health services, medication and lost work time.  Death from stroke is the third leading cause of death in the country, with approximately 500,000 strokes occurring each year.   Approximately two million Americans develop deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots in the veins annually.  

Early detection of these life-threatening vascular diseases is made possible through the use of noninvasive vascular testing techniques like those used at the Huntington Hospital Vascular Laboratory.  

Huntington Hospital joins the growing number of hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico who have worked to become ICAVL accredited.  The ICAVL is a non-profit organization established with the support of eleven medical societies comprised of physicians, technologists and sonographers.  Medical specialties include cardiology, neurology, vascular medicine, radiology, vascular surgery neurosurgery, internal medicine and biology.
