HungerU Announces 2015 Spring Tour to East Coast Universities
Grassroots tour expected to produce more than 20,000 meals for people in need
PHILADELPHIA, April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The HungerU tour is headed to East Coast colleges and universities this spring to educate students, academia and the general public about the critical role agriculture plays in feeding the world.
HungerU, a program of the Farm Journal Foundation, is a dynamic, interactive, educational exhibit that raises awareness of the hunger crisis and the important role modern agriculture plays in meeting the global demand for better nutrition. During visits to campus, students have the opportunity to digitally interact with educational resources on tablets, discuss issues surrounding food security with their peers and HungerU staff, and play games while learning.
"Our foundation is working to build understanding of the complexities of our food system, both here in the United States and in developing countries," said Tricia Beal, chief executive officer, Farm Journal Foundation.
HungerU creates a high-energy experience that not only educates but also moves students to take action. Students are also encouraged to take the HungerU Challenge, which resulted in more than 10,000 meals donated to the Food Recovery Network and Campus Kitchens Project earlier this year. In the next 60 days, tour attendees are expected to produce more than 20,000 meals for people in need.
"HungerU makes it easier for students to understand the connection between food security and food production so that they can advocate for a sustainable way to greatly reduce hunger at home and abroad," said Margie Alsbrook, director of operations for HungerU and Farm Journal Foundation.
HungerU also creates opportunities for students to engage at a deeper level with issues related to food security. On select campuses, HungerU hosts Take Your Seat at the Table panel discussions that facilitate dialogue among students, faculty and community members, allowing them to delve deeper into the related themes they've explored during the day.
The HungerU spring 2015 tour kicks off in central New York with a stop at Syracuse University on April 1-2, followed by Colgate University, and Cornell University. It will then travel through other campuses including Keene State College.
