WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by Bread for the World:
WHAT: The release of Bread for the World Institute's Hunger Report 2012: Rebalancing Act: Updating U.S. Food and Farm Policies, and panel discussion
WHEN: Monday, November 21, 2011, from 9-11 a.m. EST
WHERE: Murrow, White, and Lisagor Rooms, National Press Club
529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC
WHO: Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World Institute; Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group; Mariana Chilton, principal investigator for the Witnesses to Hunger Program at Drexel University; and H.E. Elkanah Odembo, ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to the United States. Reporter Alan Bjerga of Bloomberg News will moderate the discussion.
WHY: Rebalancing Act calls for bolder, more determined thinking about how U.S. food and farm policies can meet the challenges of the 21st century. The report proposes a rebalancing of farm policies to improve efficiency, encourage production and distribution of healthy foods, support rural development, and help farmers manage risk more efficiently. The report also documents the importance of food assistance in this country and food aid internationally, and proposes reforms to make both more nutritious.
"Budget pressures may finally help to achieve long-overdue reforms that would make our nation's farm policies work better for farmers and save money for taxpayers," said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World Institute. "We want farm policies that will help families who really need help, protect the environment, contribute to a more nutritious food supply, and promote the expansion of food production globally—especially in developing countries—in order to help reduce world hunger."
