Hunger Relief for 400 Indy Families - Feed The Children and Fazoli's Distribute Food & Essentials to Families in Need
LEXINGTON, K.Y., July 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With $20 billion in looming cuts to the SNAP food stamps program, hunger relief organizations continue to find innovative ways to help families in need. This week, Feed The Children, one of the country's largest disaster and hunger relief organizations, will be in Indianapolis with corporate partner Fazoli's to distribute food and essentials to approximately 400 families. The distribution is part of the national Breadsticks For Hunger Tour, which was created by the partnership, with stops in 22 cities this summer. The distribution will take place at the Midwest Food Bank on South Belmont Road this Wednesday, July, 31 at 9:00 a.m.
Along with distributing food, the tour is raising funds and awareness for childhood hunger. The centerpiece of the tour is a customized food truck used for handing out Fazoli's breadsticks. Those receiving the breadsticks are encouraged to donate to Feed The Children. In addition, Fazoli's created a special flavored drink named "Giving Grape Lemon Ice" and will donate $1 to Feed The Children for every one it sells throughout the summer. Last year the tour raised $50,000, plus donations of 9 tons of food. Already this summer, the tour is on track to surpass last year's $50,000 donation. Those interested in tracking the tour can go to www.breadsticksforhunger.com.
Fazoli's CEO Carl Howard, will participate in the food distribution along with other Fazoli's employees and restaurant staff. He believes the Breadsticks For Hunger Tour is a great example of how companies can get creative to help organizations like Feed The Children. "Fazoli's is pleased to be a partner with Feed The Children," said Howard. "It's personally rewarding to be part of the distribution efforts, and from an organization standpoint, all of our restaurant associates are excited to be part of the effort. Indianapolis is also our largest market, and we are thrilled to give back to the community."
At the Indianapolis distribution, a semi-trailer will be used to distribute food and essentials. Assistance in the distribution will be provided by the staff and volunteers at the Midwest Food Bank. Each family will receive a 25-pound box of food and a 10-pound box of personal care items. The boxes are designed to help a family of four for up to one week. In the metro
Indianapolis area, more than 80,000 children are at risk for hunger. And according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 16 million American children are at risk of hunger.
"We sincerely appreciate Fazoli's for its ongoing support to our mission," said Feed The Children Vice President of Strategic Initiatives Jill vanEgmond. "With the proposed cuts to SNAP, we will need other companies to partner with our organization in order to meet the growing needs for hunger and disaster relief."
