CLEVELAND, Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland is pleased to announce the launch of Hunger Network Food Rescue – an app that will address the disconnect between food that is wasted and those who are hungry in our community. Did you know 40% of America's food goes to waste while 1 in 5 people face hunger every day right here in Cuyahoga County? The Hunger Network Food Rescue is using the ride-share business model to transform the fight against hunger.
"Hunger Network has served the region for 40 years, providing nearly 4 million meals each year," says Jennifer Scofield, Hunger Network CEO. "Hunger Network Food Rescue offers an opportunity for everyone to take part in ending hunger. Through this, we can ensure that the good food we have feeds people, not landfills."
Giant Eagle, the region's largest grocer, has committed to working with Hunger Network Food Rescue to transfer grocery items from their stores directly to organizations that serve families in need. This effort also builds on the work that Hunger Network has launched with Perfectly Imperfect Produce – a partnership to reduce food waste throughout Cleveland launched in 2016.
"We are very excited to see Food Rescue and the foundation we built with Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh expand to Cleveland," says Leah Lizarondo, founder of Food Rescue Hero. "Very few actually understand that the important bottleneck to recovering food at retail locations is truly transportation. This is a job for all of us -- it takes only a little bit of time, we have a vehicle and a simple act truly contributes to help end hunger."
Food Rescue Hero sends push notifications to volunteer drivers and lets users view nearby "rescue" opportunities. The built-in navigation, delivery verification, and social media tools guide food rescue heroes step-by-step through their rescue.
