Hunger Impacts One in Eight Marylanders
Larry & Sons teams with the Maryland Food Bank to help the hungry this holiday season
HAGERSTOWN, Md., Nov. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hunger is an issue everywhere, even in one of the richest states in the nation. More than 760,000 people in Maryland don't know where their next meal is coming from.
Larry & Sons, a leading air conditioning, heating and plumbing company serving Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland and surrounding counties for nearly 50 years, is pitching in to help out.
"It's our pleasure and privilege to work with the Maryland Food Bank, to help in some small way with the issue of hunger in our community," says Eric Corbett, president and owner of Larry & Sons. "We'll be accepting donations for the entire month of November, and all donations will go directly to help the hungry."
The food items that are most needed include:
- Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.)
- Peanut butter
- Pasta
- Fruits (canned or dried)
- Canned soups
- Canned vegetables
- Evaporated and powdered milk
- Infant formula
- Breakfast cereal and oatmeal
- Rice
- Nuts and seeds
- Beans (canned or dried)
Collectively, Marylanders miss more than 134 million meals per year, impacting one in eight people in the state. With today's stagnant wages and the steadily rising cost of living, some individuals are working full time and still struggling to put food on the table. In fact, 39 percent of food-insecure people in Maryland earn too much to qualify for federal or state relief. These people rely solely on food banks and other hunger relief agencies as they struggle to meet their basic needs.
"I was stunned when I learned how big the problem really is," Corbett says. "This is a constant battle, and you never know who's impacted. It could be your next-door neighbor, or even a family member. One day, it could be you. That's why we're participating in this food drive—to help address this issue in our community."
Donations may be dropped off at Larry and Sons, 20 Hump Rd. Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
