Hundreds to Celebrate School Choice at Michigan State Capitol
LANSING, Mich., Jan. 16, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Many students, teachers, and parents from a variety of educational backgrounds will gather at the Michigan State Capitol to celebrate National School Choice Week on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will give teachers, students, and parents the opportunity to voice their support for schools of choice. Student groups from district, charter, online, and nonpublic schools will be on hand to display some of the various education options available to families. Michigan's Rep. Paul Mitchell, co-chair of the Congressional School Choice Caucus, will be on hand to meet students and offer a few remarks. Student testimonies, dance performance, and a unique speed chess match will highlight the noontime celebration in the Capitol Rotunda.
This event is planned to coincide with the history-making celebration of National School Choice Week 2019, which will feature more than 40,000 school choice events across all 50 states.
"We are excited for Michigan leaders to see what National School Choice Week is about and how students and families benefit from having the widest possible variety of effective education options," said Ben DeGrow, director of education policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. "The current menu of options covers public and private, district and charter, brick-and-mortar and online, traditional school and home-schooled, and in many cases the ability to blend these options. The Capitol event is a great opportunity to celebrate choice and diversity, and to see that moving away from one-size-fits-all solutions offers the best hope of lifting Michigan up to become a model of educational success."
This event is organized by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies, the state's charter school association, and the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit institute that advances the principles of free markets and limited government.
As a nonpartisan, nonpolitical public awareness effort, National School Choice Week shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for students, families, and communities around the country. From January 20 through 26, 2019, more than 40,000 independently-planned events will be held in celebration of the Week. For more information, visit www.schoolchoiceweek.com.
