Humorous Look at Life in the U.S. Army
Award-Winning Author Recounts Humor and Hardship of Service in New Memoir
AURORA, Ill., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In his new memoir, That Shade of Green (published by Trafford Publishing), author Robert Poindexter takes a humorous look at life in the U.S. Army, covering his induction, basic training and permanent duty in Korea.
When a 22-year-old college graduate who is ready to begin a career in the business world is drafted, he soon finds his aspirations interrupted by an unpopular war (Vietnam) and the famous draft lottery employed by former President Nixon. After he realizes that there is no way to avoid involuntarily entering the Army, this young man quickly decides to make the most of his situation and takes advantage of the opportunities that are presented to him during his two-year obligation to his country.
After Poindexter's graduation from Northern Illinois University, he was drafted during the summer of 1970. Follow him as his physical limits are tested as he is inducted into the Army in Chicago. Train with him at Fort Campbell and Fort Bliss as he prepares for a 13-month tour of Korea. And throughout his journey, meet his closest friends and even some of his adversaries as they use humor to not only bond together, but also to maintain a sunny disposition in spite of the circumstances.
While the training is serious business, you'll soon find that there are indeed many moments of hilarity when it comes to the great lengths the instructors went to in order to get vital points across to their men. Once the training is over -- whether it was all meaningful or not is something Poindexter still questions to this day -- he is then assigned to a permanent-duty station.
Whether you're a military veteran or an Army newbie, now's your chance to reminisce with one man who learned firsthand that even military life is not all serious. Poindexter's inspiring and funny That Shade of Green is a well-written memoir that dares to portray both his fond and not-so-fond memories.
