Human Relations Commission Invites Public Testimony at Reading School District Investigatory Hearing
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission will hold a multi-session public investigatory hearing later this month to examine community reports of racial tension and discrimination within the Reading School District.
The hearing will be held Sept. 28, 29 and 30, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day, in the Miller Center for the Arts Auditorium at Reading Area Community College, 4 N. 2nd St., Reading.
The hearing will have a different focus each night: equal educational opportunity on the Sept. 28, equal employment opportunity on the Sept. 29 and school safety on the Sept. 30. The public is invited to provide testimony regarding their interaction with the school district as students, parents, employees or job applicants.
Those wishing to testify are encouraged to call Doreen Winey at 717-783-8886 or e-mail [email protected] at least two days prior to the hearing. E-mails should be sent with the subject line "Reading testimony," and messages should include a name and phone number.
Special accommodations for people with disabilities are available on request to the number or e-mail address above. Spanish translation will be provided.
Commissioners voted to hold the hearing after area students, parents and representatives of community organizations expressed concerns to the commission. The Pa. Human Relations Act gives the commission legal authority to hold such hearings and make recommendations in order to identify and resolve racial tension or discrimination wherever it exists.
