Huge Powerball Drawing Creates Big Winners Across PA, New Funds to Benefit Older Pennsylvanians

MIDDLETOWN, Pa., Aug. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball® players did not come away empty-handed in last night's drawing for the game's second-largest jackpot on record.

In Pennsylvania, there were more than 485,000 winners of nearly $13 million in the August 23 Powerball drawing – including one $2 million winner and four winners of $1 million.

There were also four winners of $200,000 and 14 winners of $50,000 among hundreds of thousands of other winners. Visit palottery.com for details on payouts at all prize levels.

A jackpot-winning ticket sold in Chicopee, Massachusetts matched the five white balls drawn, 06-07-16-23-26, and the red Powerball, 04.  That ticket won the jackpot with a final annuity value of $758.7 million, or a cash prize of $480.5 million.

In Pennsylvania, the winning ticket worth $2 million matched five of the white balls drawn and was purchased with the Power Play® option, which boosted the prize to $2 million instead of $1 million. That ticket was sold by Fresh & Quick, 245 Main St., Catawissa, Columbia County.

The four $1 million winning tickets matched five of the five white balls drawn, and were sold by the following retailers:

• Marathon, 100 E. 7^th Ave., Tarentum, Allegheny County;
• 7-Eleven, 1483 W. Street Road, Warminster, Bucks County;
• Darrenkamp's Market, 945 E. Main St., Mount Joy, Lancaster County; and
• Weis Markets, 365 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown, Lehigh County.

The four $200,000 tickets matched four of the five white balls drawn, the Powerball, and purchased the Power Play® option which boosted their prize to $200,000 instead of $50,000 because Wednesday's multiplier was four. Those tickets were sold by the following retailers:

• Get Go, 2401 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, Allegheny County;
• Martin General Stores, 3218 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, Blair County;
• Giant Food Store, 50 Briar Creek Plaza, Berwick, Columbia County; and
• Weis Markets, 339 W. Walnut St., Shamokin, Northumberland County.

A grand total of 485,326 Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball tickets won prizes of various amounts, including 92,115 tickets purchased with the Power Play option that multiplied their prizes by four. Players are reminded to check every ticket, every time.

The Powerball jackpot had been rolling since the June 10 drawing. During the jackpot run, the Pennsylvania Lottery saw over $91 million in Powerball and Power Play sales, and awarded more than $45.7 million in prizes to 1,689,143 winners.

In Pennsylvania, winners have one year from the drawing date to claim their prizes. Winners cannot be identified until prizes are claimed and tickets are validated.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday, August 26, reset to a $40 million annuity value or a $25.3 million cash prize.  

How to play Powerball: Players pay $2 and select five white balls from the first set of 69 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 26 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball playslip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.

Purchasing the $1 Power Play option allows a winner to increase lower-tier prizes by a factor of 2, 3, 4 or 5, depending on the Power Play number drawn. A 10X multiplier will be available for the Match 4+1 prize and lower prize tiers when the jackpot is at or below $150 million, or when announced. The jackpot and the Match 5 prize are not multiplied. The Match 5 prize with the Power Play option is worth $2 million. It is $1 million without Power Play.

Powerball is sold in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Pennsylvania, tickets are sold until 9:59 p.m. on drawing nights, Wednesday and Saturday.
