"When HTC offered one free screen replacement on its newest phones, we wondered if this was to make up for poor design that was going to make phones shatter more often than most, or a genuine, value-add to consumers in a new HTC strategy to grab market share," said Ty Shay, CMO at SquareTrade. "This was our first time testing HTC's Breakability and both the One and One Max did surprisingly well. In fact, the HTC One is now tied with the Moto X for least breakable. Perhaps the underdogs are out-designing their larger competitors."
Based on key elements such as front and back panel design, edge construction, materials, size, weight, friction quotient, water resistance and grip-ability, the SquareTrade Breakability Score ranks today's top devices based on how prone they are to break due to accidents. The higher a device scores on a scale from 1-10, the higher the risk of it breaking.
SquareTrade's Breakability Score revealed that the HTC One is just as durable as the top performing Moto X.
- Because the HTC screens are incased on top and bottom by metal bumpers, they performed very well in corner drop tests.
- Both HTCs also fared well in the dunk test – although sound was slightly affected
- Due to its larger size, the HTC One Max had a lower friction coefficient thereby making it more susceptible to perilous slides. And its large size gave it a lesser score on grip-ability.
