How to Choose a Capacity Planning Tool

Virtually every performance monitoring vendor claims to have capacity planning capabilities. "Unfortunately for the buyer, purchasing a capacity planning tool can have its pitfalls," said Hill. "Anybody with a dartboard can claim to have a server capacity planning tool. Make sure you know what you're getting and be sure the tool fits your needs."

Hill suggested, for example, that if a vendor touts analytic modeling capabilities, make sure the vendor is talking about a tool that will use mathematical formulas to predict the performance of a queuing network – a queuing network solver.

The advantage is that users can instantly calculate the performance characteristics. "You don't need to run a simulation to get the results. It's much faster to evaluate different what-if scenarios and is very, very accurate with a lot less effort."
