How to Avoid Untimely Winter Repairs to Your Philadelphia Home
Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning is encouraging Philadelphia homeowners to prepare their heating and plumbing now for early freezing temperatures
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned home service company with an A+ rating by the BBB, recommends that residents in the Philadelphia area prepare now ahead of some of the first expected lows below freezing.
"While low temperatures in November aren't always below freezing in Philly, we do frequently have a few outliers," said Joseph Giannone, owner of Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. "Too often, homeowners aren't prepared for those early cold days and run into unexpected plumbing and heating issues."
The first step to making sure a home is ready for winter is to make sure the heating system is prepared to operate smoothly, efficiently and effectively throughout the season.
"Being proactive with your furnace or boiler can pay off tenfold," Giannone said. "Routine maintenance and inspections ahead of cold days can save a tremendous amount in repairs. Heating systems are more likely to fail if neglected, and almost half of the ones that do fail typically malfunction during the initial cold days or on the coldest days due to the extra strain."
The Joseph Giannone team advises that a properly operating heating system is central to avoiding serious issues on nights that drop below freezing. Maintaining a temperature at least 55 degrees or higher is not only important for comfort, but it helps prevent disasters with interior plumbing.
"A lot of issues with pipes freezing and bursting stem from improperly heated, sealed and insulated homes, especially ones that are then left vacant by holiday travelers," Giannone said. "During colder weather, it's important to keep the thermostat set to higher temperatures than you may normally choose for periods of inoccupancy."
Giannone's plumbing experts recommend that homeowners perform a check of all the visible plumbing in their home and assess the level of insulation ahead of freezing temperatures. Pipe sleeves and heat tape are viable options for plumbing in cooler areas of the home, and leaving vanity and sink doors open will allow the warm air in the living spaces of the home to circulate around any exposed plumbing. Make sure that each vent in the home is open and that warm air is coming out, and leave doors open on the higher floors to help the heat migrate through the home.
"If pipes do burst, call a restoration company immediately before anyone else," Giannone said. "The longer you wait, the more damage will spread and increase the loss. A company with free in-home evaluations is preferred, and if you don't have one, contact us at Joseph Giannone for a referral."
