Analyst Update: Reappointment and Financial Results
Reviewed by: Rohit Tuli, CFA®
It's almost a week into the New Year now and global market sell-off shows no signs of easing yet. The U.S. markets fell again on Tuesday, January 6, with S&P 500 index continuing its southward journey for the fifth consecutive session. Steadily declining oil prices and uncertainty ahead of the Greek vote which may determine Greece's future in the Eurozone kept global investors jittery. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session lower by 0.74% at 17,371.64, the S&P 500 ended 0.89% down at 2,002.46, and the Nasdaq Composite finished 1.29% down at 4,592.74. The European markets also closed lower on Tuesday as Euro slumped to nine-year low levels against the greenback, driven by the concerns over political turmoil in Greece. Meanwhile, Asian markets were also under pressure on Tuesday as Eurozone worries coupled with growth concerns over China rattled investors.
Silvercorp Metals Inc. (Silvercorp) - a low-cost silver-producing Canadian mining re-appointed Company's Founder and Chairman, Dr. Rui Feng, to the CEO position. The Company also recruited Derek Liu, who will assume the role of interim CFO, effective February 2015.
Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co. (Shanghai Petrochemical) reported lower third quarter 2014 top line. Bottom line for the quarter contracted 97.7% YoY, adversely affected by the weakness in prices of petrochemical products.
Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile's (Sociedad Quimica) third quarter 2014 top line declined 10.5% YoY, dragged by weakness across all segments except Industrial Chemicals segment. Net income for the quarter declined 52.2% YoY, due to sale of royalties for the Antucoya mining project in Q3 2013, which had a one-time, after-tax effect of $67 million on net income.
Southern Copper Corp. (Southern Copper) reported higher third quarter 2014 top line with copper production increasing by 4.7% YoY and molybdenum production increasing 26.9% YoY. The rise in copper and molybdenum production was attributable to higher production from the Company's Buenavista and Toquepala operations. However, bottom line declined 5.8% YoY.
Stepan Company's (Stepan) third quarter 2014 bottom line declined 33.9% YoY. However, the top line for the quarter witnessed growth, primarily due to higher average selling prices in both the Surfactant and Polymer segments and an 8% volume growth in the Polymer segment.
