Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine offers sports physicals for all school activities
HOUSTON, May 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Houston Methodist Orthopedic and Sports Medicine physicians with Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital are offering sports physicals for all school activities on Saturdays, June 7 and August 2 from 8 a.m. to noon at 13802 Centerfield Drive, Suite 300 on the campus of Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.
Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine physicians make community a priority by volunteering, educating and providing event support for youth sports and organized sports clubs across Houston. Primary care sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons work together to educate the participants, coaches and support staff on the importance of proper training and technique in achieving optimal performance, as well as how to recognize early warning signs before a more serious injury occurs.
"As a group of physicians committed to the health of our community athletes, we have a responsibility to provide health care in their field of play and in our facilities," Scott Rand, M.D., director of the primary care sports medicine program at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. "We donate our time to provide these sports physicals and medical support to other community sporting events because we want to help our athletes stay active."
The sports physicals will be offered to athletes ages 12-18 at 13802 Centerfield Drive, Suite 300. The cost of the physical is $20, with optional EKG screening offered for an additional $10 and IMPACT baseline concussion testing for $5 (cash only). No appointment is necessary.
Other community events for which the physicians and the Houston Methodist athletic trainers provided medical support and education include a Klein ISD Athletics luncheon, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, on-campus school sports physicals, and educational seminars for area youth and adult organized club sports events.
"Many of our doctors are part of running clubs and local triathlon groups, both in an advisory and participating athlete capacity," added Rand, who also serves as medical director of the Houston Methodist Human Performance Lab. "We're also little league coaches and parents with kids in sports just like our patients. So working within the community to provide medical support and ensure safe play is a natural extension for us."
