Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Physician Participates in Olympic Training Program for Select Healthcare Providers
HOUSTON, July 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Scott Rand, M.D., a primary care sports medicine physician at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital recently participated in a select program for healthcare providers designated to travel with U.S. Olympic teams.
The Olympic team healthcare provider training was held at the U.S. Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the flagship training center and headquarters for the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Olympic Training Center programs. USA Swimming and USA Shooting have their national headquarters at the complex, along with more than 15 other member organizations and two international sports federations. The facility includes a state-of-the-art sports medicine and sports science center.
"Physicians, athletic trainers, therapists and other medical support personnel from all over the world came together with a single focus of keeping these athletes performing at their best," Rand said. "Working with the Olympic sports medicine team and the other volunteers in this program was a tremendous experience."
Rand is the director of the primary care sports medicine fellowship program at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, medical director of the Houston Methodist Human Performance Lab and team physician for the USA Weightlifting and Gymnastics teams.
His work at the Olympic Training Center involved a broad range of care for the top athletes in wrestling, weightlifting, modern pentathlon, shooting, fencing, gymnastics, judo, taekwondo, swimming, and track and field.
Bill Moreau, managing director for sports medicine with the U.S. Olympic Committee, said physicians selected for the program are among the best in their field and have met strict qualifications established by the Olympic Committee.
"This caliber of the U.S. Olympic athlete is unlike any other patient population," Moreau said. "We're very selective about the medical volunteers participating in this training program and some physicians have waited years before they're approved for the program."
Moreau explained that a portion of this training program is to see how well these physicians work with the athletes and how well they interact with new members of the sports medicine and medical support teams.
"Sometimes, the new members of the medical support teams are unfamiliar with sports medicine, so our physicians must be prepared to interact with and teach them," Moreau said. "We include this training because that's a common scenario at Olympic events."
In addition to the training center in Colorado Springs, the U.S. Olympic Committee has centers in Chula Vista, California, and Lake Placid, New York. An additional fifteen training sites are located throughout the U.S.
"We couldn't be more proud to have Dr. Rand represent Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in this select program," said Beryl Ramsey, chief executive officer of Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and senior vice president of Houston Methodist. "Now, he's able to bring that experience back to the elite athletes who come to Houston Methodist for their healthcare needs."
In addition to his work with U.S. Olympic teams, Rand and his colleagues provide game coverage and sideline support for professional, collegiate and high school teams throughout Houston. These physicians are providing all school sports physicals on Saturday, August 2 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the Centerfield Building on the Houston Methodist Willowbrook campus
