Houston ISD Adds RFID Technology to Efficiently Verify the Locations of Student 1:1 Technology Assets
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Houston Independent School District, the seventh largest school district in the country, has added radio frequency identification (RFID) functionality to their suite of inventory control solutions provided by Hayes Software Systems.
For eight years, Houston ISD has utilized Hayes's TIPWeb-IT and TIPWeb-IM systems to manage over 4 million assets and instructional materials valued at over $1 billion. Hayes's industry-leading RFID technology will be used to conduct location verifications of assets in their PowerUp Initiative, one of the largest 1:1 initiatives in the country. Launched in 2014, PowerUp was created to transform teaching and learning by "powering up" schools with technology to create personalized learning environments.
The addition of RFID will result in significant time savings for the large, urban district with nearly 300 locations. Previously, inventory verifications were conducted once per year. The efficiencies of verifying asset location with RFID allow Houston ISD to conduct inventory audits on a regular basis, ensuring data accurately reflects asset status, location, and assignment.
Hayes's TIPWeb-IT with RFID solution is the first radio frequency identification asset management system designed specifically for K-12 education. By eliminating the need for line-of-sight capture, RFID allows school districts to verify inventory locations 20% faster than traditional barcode scanning. It easily identifies hard-to-reach assets that are in protective cases, mounted on ceilings, located in laptop carts, and even those that are in students' hands during class. RFID is a solution to common challenges faced by school districts including limited staff resources, increasing quantities of inventory, and an overwhelming number of building locations and storage areas.
"We are very excited to expand our relationship with Houston ISD," said Matt Winebright, President and CEO of Hayes. "We've had a fantastic partnership with them for a long time, and this is a great next step. The district is steadfast in their commitment to responsible inventory control and the addition of RFID functionality echoes that. The ability to verify inventory quickly and accurately will amplify Houston's ability to protect the investment they've made in the technology that is instrumental to teaching and learning."
Houston ISD's implementation of RFID will be led by a dedicated customer success team and includes comprehensive training, consulting services with strategic recommendations for success, and customized RFID tags that are specific to HISD's environment.
