Big Four Accounting Firms of Houston Fill 9,067 Food Sacks at the Houston Food Bank
120 Volunteers Pack the Equivalent of 54,382 Pounds or 45,318 Meals for the Backpack Buddy Program
HOUSTON, Nov. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Houston offices of the Big Four accounting firms — Deloitte LLP, EY, KPMG LLP and PwC US — came together on Friday to participate in the second annual "Food Fight" to support the Houston Food Bank as a joint effort to end hunger in the region.
This year, the organizations set a goal to fill 1,500 bags each. The food sacks are being filled as part of the Houston Food Bank's Backpack Buddy program, which provides food to children in need. At Friday's event, a total of 120 volunteers from the four organizations successfully filled 9,067 food sacks – equivalent to 45,318 nutritious meals or 54,382 pounds – exceeding their goal by about 51 percent.
"A little healthy competition is a good thing, both in business and in service to the community," says Brian Greene, Houston Food Bank President/CEO. "We are excited to have Houston's Big Four accounting firms coming together in friendly competition, to show how we can all work together to help feed the hungry. This is an amazing competition to watch, and we know one thing for sure – the accounting will be VERY accurate!"
The Backpack Buddy program, which launched in August 2006 at three Houston-area elementary schools, now provides approximately 38,500 backpacks per month to students at 450 schools. Ten Houston Food Bank member agencies also assist with the distribution of these backpacks, providing healthy food to chronically hungry children who might otherwise go without.
