House Resolution Supports GEAR UP Day Sept. 29
WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The celebration of National GEAR UP Day on Wednesday, September 29 is looking like a winner in the House of Representatives with Members scheduled to approve Resolution 1638 later today by unanimous voice vote.
The resolution, sponsored by Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) with a bipartisan list of 26 cosponsors, supports the goals and ideals of a National GEAR UP Day and puts the House on record as applauding the program's decade-plus of achievement.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), created and guided into law by Congressman Fattah, has provided college readiness and preparation for 12 million students since its launch in 1999.
GEAR UP continues to reach new milestones, currently serving 670,000 sixth through 12th graders. About $3 billion in federal education dollars have fueled these programs in 49 states, the District of Columbia and American territories since September 1999, and the GEAR UP model has been adopted in other countries.
"GEAR UP in 11 years has achieved all we envisioned and more," Fattah said. "GEAR UP creates awareness and prepares our most underserved students as early as the sixth grade that it's okay to be dreaming big dreams of college and lifetime opportunity – and that the hard work of preparedness starts now.
"The value of GEAR UP is evident to educators, parents and students everywhere," Fattah said. "So it is appropriate to pause – just for a moment – and salute all this effort with the National GEAR UP Day celebration. I'm pleased that my colleagues in the House appreciate the value of this program."
