COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Carolinas AGC supports the Right to Work Act of 2012 that Gov. The passage of this legislation is vital to the state and to the construction industry because it ramps up the state's Right to Work laws. Carolinas AGC applauds Gov. Nikki Haley, Chairman Sandifer and House Republicans for taking such a big step toward protecting contractors and creating a level playing field for all companies in South Carolina.
During the press conference, Gov. Nikki Haley said, "we don't have unions because we don't need unions." She went on to say that "protecting citizens and employers in our state is most important, and this legislation does just that." Haley concluded her remarks by saying "unions are not needed, wanted, or welcome in South Carolina."
Chairman Bill Sandifer, the author of the bill, H. 4652, announced that all 76 members of the SC House Republican Caucus had signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation, which was filled later Tuesday. The bill was referred to Chairman Sandifer's committee and is expected to see quick action. Among other things, the legislation prohibits the use of Project Labor Agreement (PLA's) mandates on public construction projects.
Gov. Haley also announced that she signed an executive order Tuesday, prohibiting striking workers from receiving unemployment benefits.
