House Democratic Leader Pelosi, Congressman Kennedy Visit Simmons College to Discuss Women & STEM
BOSTON, Nov. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Massachusetts Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III visited Simmons College for a roundtable discussion regarding engaging women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. The leaders were joined by Simmons faculty and students, as well as STEM education leaders from across Massachusetts.
Prior to the discussion, Democratic Leader and the Congressman toured Simmons's undergraduate science labs.
"We were delighted to host two incredible leaders who are interested in how we can support more women and girls to enter and remain in STEM fields – one of the fastest growing segments of the job market," said Helen Drinan, Simmons College president. "Engaging the entire community in this effort is essential to making an impact."
In addition to leading an interactive conversation on how we can increase the number of women pursuing careers in STEM professions, Leader Pelosi and Congressman Kennedy focused on the federal, state, and local efforts underway to encourage women and girls to pursue careers in STEM.
Simmons has a long track record of educating and training young women for successful STEM careers. The College provides women early access to research at the undergraduate level, and the necessary mentoring and support to help women be successful. Simmons also maintains strong partnerships that help more women gain access and training to STEM careers.
This was a return visit to Simmons for Leader Pelosi who was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree in 2004.
