WASHINGTON, Dec. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) will speak at a National Press Club speakers luncheon on January 13. The Armed Services Committee has the responsibility to oversee the Pentagon, all military services, and all Department of Defense agencies, including their budgets and policies.
Thornberry is leading Capitol Hill efforts to improve the efficiency of the Pentagon's weapon buying process while spurring innovation in contractors to help the U.S. be better at meeting the threats it faces. He believes lawmakers need to reevaluate whether the Defense Department's acquisition process has becomes too centralized and removed from the military services that depend on those various weapons systems.
Thornberry was critical of President Obama for signing what Thornberry called the "exact same bill" as the one the president vetoed weeks earlier, but with a $5 billion smaller budget. He lead a failed Republican effort to evade spending caps by stuffing the military's wartime spending account, which is not subject to spending caps.
Thornberry succeeded Buck McKeon after the 2014 elections as chairman of House Armed Services. He is a fifth-generation Texas native who was first elected to the House in 1994.
The Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. EST. Remarks will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by going to http://www.press.org/events/npc-luncheon-mac-thornberry-r-tx-chairman-house-armed-services-committee.
